Former Tennessee Vol Drew Gilbert makes a jaw-dropping play in his major league debut for the San Francisco Giants originally appeared on A to Z Sports.

Drew Gilbert created quite a few memorable moments with his bat when he was with the Tennessee Volunteers. In particular, his walk off grand slam against Wright State in the 2021 postseason still gets replayed from time to time by Vol fans.

However, it was his glove that brought the home crowd to their feet on Friday night in San Francisco.

In his Major League debut, Gilbert manned right field for the Giants. With San Francisco up 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Washington center fielder Jacob Young slapped the ball towards the line in deep right field. Gilbert took off, laid out, and made a highlight-reel inning-ending catch.

Gilbert came into the game on a hot streak with Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, San Francisco’s top minor league squad. He went 7-14 at the dish in five games with 2 RBIs and three runs plated. For the year, Gilbert has posted a .262 average, an .835 OPS, 14 HR, 55 RBIs, 20 doubles, 4 triples, and 6 stolen bases in 93 games, with 82 of those games at the AAA level.

Gilbert becomes the tenth former Tennessee player from Tony Vitello’s tenure called up to the big leagues, joining Garrett Crochet (White Sox, 2020), Ben Joyce (Angels, 2023), Andre Lipcius (Tigers, 2023), Trey Lipscomb (Nationals, 2024), Jordan Beck (Rockies, 2024), Seth Halvorsen (Rockies, 2024), Chase Dollander (Rockies, 2025), Blade Tidwell (Mets, 2025) and Christian Moore (Angels, 2025)

We’ll see how things go for Gilbert as he continues the first stages of his MLB career, but it certainly was a start that Giants fans appreciated.
