The San Francisco 49ers are adding depth to their running back room in a trade with the Washington Commanders.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday reported the Commanders are dealing disgruntled running back Brian Robinson to San Francisco. The 49ers are sending out a 2026 sixth-round pick in the deal.
Robinson was a third-round pick by Washington in the 2022 draft and he’s entering the final year of his rookie contract. Without a long-term deal in place, Robinson and the Commanders agreed he would sit out the preseason as the team searched for a trade partner. There’s no word on whether the 49ers have an extension on the table for him. Robinson is due to cost $3,618,255 against the salary cap this year according to Over the Cap. NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo reported the Commanders will take on some of Robinson’s $3.4 million base salary.
The 26-year-old will step into a running back room spearheaded by Christian McCaffrey. Depth behind McCaffrey is shaky thanks to a slew of injury issues on the 49ers’ roster. Isaac Guerendo is back in practice, but he’s had an injury-riddled career dating back to college. Patrick Taylor Jr. and undrafted rookie Corey Kiner are both out for the year, and rookie fifth-round pick Jordan James hasn’t been able to practice because of a broken finger that required surgery.
Robinson gives San Francisco another backup RB for McCaffrey. He joins a room with Guerendo, James, Jeff Wilson Jr. and Ke’Shawn Vaughn. The 49ers will likely keep four of that group on the 53-man roster. With McCaffrey, Guerendo and James looking like locks, Robinson probably rounds out the RB room with Wilson and Vaughn the odd men out.
Robinson has had injury issues of his own throughout his career. However, he’s been the primary back for the Commanders for the last three years. He posted 2,329 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns on 570 carries in 41 games. Robinson has also been a reliable pass-catching option with 65 catches for 587 yards and five touchdowns in his career.
Last season he played in 14 games and had 799 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 187 attempts.
