Pickleball enthusiasts in San Francisco have a new local spot to enjoy their sport. The city has unveiled four new pickleball courts at the Crocker Amazon Playground. The recent addition is part of an effort by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department to ramp up public recreational facilities, per the department’s announcement.
The project is spearheaded by the San Francisco Tennis and Pickleball Planning Roundtable (SF-TAPP), a group dedicated to enhancing the city’s tennis and pickleball infrastructure. According to the SF Rec and Park, the roundtable executed surveys and community outreach to pinpoint less-used spaces that could be repurposed for pickleball activity. SF-TAPP’s comprehensive recommendations report is expected to be released next month.
General Manager Phil Ginsburg is clearly banking on the pickleball craze not getting served a backhand in coming years, “These new courts are part of a broader, long-term commitment to expanding equitable access to high-quality recreation throughout San Francisco,” he stated, per the SF Rec and Park. With the number of local pickleball courts leaping from a mere 12 in 2018 to an impressive count exceeding 90 today, it seems the city’s love for the sport is anything but a fad.
