‘We’re not doing that’ – 49ers GM John Lynch makes strong statement about former Tennessee WR Jauan Jennings’ future in San Francisco

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings has had an offseason filled with some drama.

The former Tennessee Vols standout is entering the final season of the two-year extension he signed with the 49ers a year ago. Jennings wants a new contract, and he reportedly requested a trade from San Francisco if the franchise is unwilling to give him a new deal.

Jennings is also dealing with a calf injury, which the 49ers maintain is unrelated to his contract situation (some in the media have suggested that Jennings is slow-playing his return to practice because of his desire for a new contract).

49ers general manager John Lynch addressed Jennings’ status on Wednesday while speaking with reporters.

Lynch confirmed that Jennings asked for a trade “a while ago”, but he also made it clear that San Francisco isn’t going to trade the former Vol.

“You know, a while ago he did [ask for a trade], but that was a long time ago, and we’ve moved on from that,” said Lynch.

When asked by a reporter when Jennings asked for the trade, Lynch said he’s “not getting into that”.

“He asked for [a trade], and we’ve moved on,” said Lynch. “We’re not doing that. So we’re moving forward.”

Lynch added that “both things can be true” when it comes to Jennings’ injury and his contract wishes.

“He’s been putting in work on the side and we’ll have to make that judgment (when he’s ready to play) when the time comes,” noted Lynch. “You know, the other thing is that both things can be true — he wants a new contract, and he’s got a calf injury. So I think people want to assume it’s one or the other, but both things can be true.”

It sounds like the 49ers have no intention of giving in to Jennings’ wishes.

With the season set to start in a couple of weeks, the best thing Jennings can do is get healthy and perform at an elite level so an NFL team has no choice but to offer him a lucrative multi-year deal next offseason.
