Soak up September in San Francisco with these 18 events | Culture

September in San Francisco is off to a sunny start.

An interactive apocalyptic book-launch party, a sand-castle competition on the beach and a 125th anniversary celebration for a city park are among 18 events you should check out over the next seven days as you soak up some rays.

Summer Sing-In presented by Golden Gate Symphony (Monday)

No experience is needed to attend a free tryout for the Golden Gate Symphony and Orchestra led by music director Urs Leonhardt Steiner. Participants can RSVP their attendance online and will have live accompaniment.

The event takes place at St. Francis Episcopal Church, which is located at 399 San Fernando Way. It runs from 7 to 9 p.m.

Free admission at the San Francisco Botanical Garden (Tuesday)

On the second Tuesday of every month, admission is free to Golden Gate Park’s 55 acres of landscaped gardens and open spaces.

Cultivate Community at Stonestown Galleria (Wednesday)

Lowell High School’s robotics team is the latest subject of a Stonestown Galleria series that celebrates local students’ achievements and contributions.

Wednesday’s event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. The mall is located at 3251 20th Ave.

T-Minus 60: A Launch Party at the Stud Bar (Wednesday)

The SoMa bar is hosting an interactive launch party to celebrate the release of “What a Fish Looks Like” by Syr Hayati Beker. T-Minus 60 attendees will have one hour to decide whether to stay on a post-apocalyptic earth or travel to outer space in search of new life. There will also be readings by local authors and performances by drag artists.

Admission is free, and attendees can also reserve a copy of the book. The launch party runs from 7 to 9 p.m. The Stud Bar is located at 399 9th St.

‘Chinatown After Dark’ presented by Nu Tekno SF (Wednesday)

Located at 57 Wentworth Place, Lion’s Den Lounge and Bar is celebrating the underground house, techno, and electronic music genres. Admission is free, but a minimum $5 donation is suggested.

Flower Piano 10th Anniversary Opening Night celebration (Friday)

Celebration Garden in San Francisco Botanical Garden will host the Montuno Swing Salsa Band as part of a special event honoring the 10th year of the outdoor music series. Every year, Flower Piano brings professional and community artists to a dozen instruments scattered across the 55-acre green space.

Tickets, which can be purchased online, cost $75 for adults and $37.50 for children ages five through 17. Children four years and under get in free. Doors open at 4 p.m, and the show will last until 7:30 p.m.

From the E: Taco Tour at the Excelsior Night Market (Friday)

The Excelsior Action Group is partnering with tour operator Mission Loteria to host a guided walking tour highlighting neighborhood Mexican restaurants. The event precedes the monthly night market, which brings live music, art, food, games and more to the area. The tour highlights five businesses — Taqueria La Iguana Azul, Ay Caray #2, El Farolito, Mama Mari’s Taqueria, Taqueria Vallarta and El Gran Taco Loco.

Self-guided tours take place from noon to 3 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. A guided version commences at 5 p.m., with attendees meeting at Taqueria La Iguana Azul. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite.

BeChinatown Night Market (Friday)

Chinatown’s monthly night market returns to Grant Avenue, with five blocks hosting food vendors, live performances and other activities. Two blocks of Waverly Place will host games for children and have seating areas.

The market runs from 5 to 9 p.m.

Yerba Buena Movie Night presents Disney’s ‘Coco’ (Saturday)

Yerba Buena Gardens is hosting a free, family-friendly screening of Disney’s 2017 animated film. It will feature pre-show entertainment with games, children activities, artists and more. Guests are encouraged to come early and picnic on the lawn, as well as dress in movie-inspired costumes.

The outdoor music series celebrates art and culture on a strip of road located between Larkin and Polk streets. Saturday’s show features performances by local musician Rojai and The Pocket, a local four-piece rhythm section band.

Celebrating Hardly Strictly Bluegrass: Lyle Lovett and his Acoustic Group (Saturday)

In partnership with the Hardly Stricly Bluegrass music festival — which is set to take place Oct. 3-5 — The San Francisco Symphony is presenting a special performance commemorating the festival’s 25th anniversary. Texas-based genre-bending musician Lyle Lovett will perform alongside the San Francisco Symphony, which is being conducted by Edwin Outwater.

Touch a Truck presented by Miraloma Cooperative Nursery School (Saturday)

The Sunnyside nursery school is hosting its second annual fundraiser at St. John’s Catholic School in Glen Park, giving kids the opportunity to imaginatively get behind the wheels of their favorite vehicles. Trucks include a Daihatsu fire engine from 1990, cement mixers, garbage trucks and school buses, among other rides. There will also be yet-to-be-announced family-friendly activities.

San Francisco Festival of the Sea (Saturday)

The San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park is celebrating The City’s maritime history with live music and dance performances. Aquatic Cove will host historic and small craft exhibitions, as well as a parade of boats across the water. The Maritime Museum Building will host sea-shanty performances, while there will also be puppet shows and storybook readings for children. Guests can also enter a sandcastle contest along the beach.

Duboce Park 125th Anniversary Celebration presented by Friends of Duboce Park (Saturday)

The 28-year-old nonprofit that organizes Duboce Triangle and Lower Haight residents is throwing a party in honor of the neighborhood green space’s 125th anniversary this year. Planned activities include dog adoptions hosted by Muttville, a dodgeball tournament, an inflatable obstacle course, photo booths, live music and plenty more. A tree will also be planted in the park to commemorate the occasion.

Fiesta de las Américas presented by the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District (Saturday)

Taking place on 24th Street from Folsom to Bryant streets, the free family-friendly celebration honors the Latino diaspora of The City with local vendors, artists and performances. Stages on Harrison, Bryant, and Treat streets will host a rotating cast of musical acts from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., which is also the festival’s duration.

Ride and Zine at Standard Deviant Brewing (Saturday)

The makers of “ComMUNIty,” a magazine that celebrates The City’s public transportation system, is hosting a launch party for its first-ever copy at Standard Deviant Brewing. Attendees who take any public-transit line to the event and show proof of their trips will receive a copy of the magazine, which features stories, art, and other projects detailing how public transportation shapes residents’ daily lives.

44th Annual San Francisco Comedy Day in Golden Gate Park (Sunday)

A stage temporarily set up in Robin Williams Meadow will host 50 performers, with five comedy sets taking place in as many hours.

‘Hole’ presented by the San Francisco Neo-Futurists (Sunday)

The Minna Street theater company is presenting a full-length, site-specific play in the Outer Richmond centered on how engaging with popular culture requires participants to dig into the lives of their subjects.

Shows will take place at 2 and 5 p.m., with the exact location being revealed via email after tickets have been purchased. General-admission tickets are available on Eventbrite for $28.52, but organizers said that no audience member will be turned away for a lack of funds.
