The San Francisco 49ers have been hit hard by injuries at the start of the 2025 season. After the opening game, they lost George Kittle and Brock Purdy. Kittle was placed on injured reserve, while Purdy has now been cleared and will return in Week 4.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Purdy has been removed from the injury report and will start against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The four-year veteran practiced on a limited basis during the week, but by Friday showed no setbacks.
Purdy’s recovery has been remarkable. The quarterback was initially expected to miss up to five weeks but is back ahead of schedule. During his absence, Mac Jones took over the 49ers’ offense and managed to defeat the New Orleans Saints and the Arizona Cardinals.
Jones leads San Francisco in passing with 563 yards and four touchdowns, completing 53 of 80 throws across those two games. Purdy, in contrast, only produced 277 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1.
49ers players ruled out for Jaguars
Just two players have been officially ruled out for Sunday’s matchup with Jacksonville. The 49ers will be without wide receiver Jordan Wakins, who is nursing a calf injury, and defensive lineman C.J. West, sidelined with a thumb issue.
Five others remain uncertain and will be evaluated during pregame warmups. Wide receivers Ricky Pearsal (knee) and Jauan Jennings (ankle) are both questionable. Jones is also dealing with knee soreness, which could open the door for Adrian Martinez to serve as QB2 against the Jaguars. Cornerback Renardo Green and offensive lineman Connor Colby round out the list of doubtful players.
