The San Francisco 49ers were horrendous in their Week 4 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Brock Purdy committed three of the team’s four turnovers, and two special teams breakdowns aided 10 Jacksonville points as the 49ers fell 26-21.
For the 49ers the performance was especially disheartening with so many players back healthy. They also have a quick turnaround to face the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday Night Football.

Jennings suffered an injury on a two-point conversion, but he didn’t miss any offensive snaps because of it. He caught two passes for 24 yards on four targets.
The 49ers still haven’t had a game where they can afford to lighten McCaffrey’s workload. A continuing issue is that McCaffrey is not particularly good in the run game. He carried 17 times for 49 yards and caught six passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. That’s 23 more touches for the 29-year-old RB and 100 total through four games.
Purdy was not sharp in his return from a toe injury. He completed 22-of-38 passes for 309 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions and a fumble. He missed high on a slew of throws and in general was not an effective player for San Francisco.
San Francisco’s defense wasn’t bad against the Jaguars, but they couldn’t get the game’s biggest stop after Brock Purdy’s fumble. TE Hunter Long snagged an easy catch-and-run to convert on third-and-5 to get the clock to the two-minute warning and seal the game.
That didn’t take long. After a first-down completion that put the 49ers across midfield, Purdy fumbled on his next dropback and Jacksonville jumped on it for their fourth takeaway of the game.
Jaguars kicker Cam Little pushed a 47-yard field goal wide right to keep the score at 26-21, and the 49ers now have a chance to win it.
San Francisco needed a relatively quick touchdown and they got one when Brock Purdy connected with TE Jake Tonges on a screen pass and the big TE rumbled for 21 yards a much-needed touchdown. Somehow the 49ers still have a chance to pull out a win at home despite their struggles. Purdy was excellent on the drive, going five-for-six for 85 yards with the touchdown. San Francisco cruised 92 yards on eight plays in a key spot.
San Francisco’s run game has been ineffective and got stuffed on a third-and-3, then Brock Purdy sailed another throw high on fourth down to give the Jaguars the ball back on their own 26. Just a horrendous offensive effort for the 49ers in Week 4.
San Francisco’s special teams is still a disaster. Parker Washington returned Thomas Morstead’s punt 87 yards for a touchdown. Two long returns have led to 10 big points for Jacksonville and their 26-14 lead.
The 49ers defense came out flying in the second half and for the first time in the third quarter kept the Jaguars out of the end zone after a turnover by San Francisco’s offense. Jacksonville did tack on a field goal to go ahead by six, but the 49ers were able to stay within a touchdown.
San Francisco nearly created a huge turnover after Purdy’s interception. On a third-and-13, Trevor Lawrence threw to rookie Travis Hunter who had the ball punched out by Warner after he turned upfield. Alas, rookie running back LeQuint Allen was there to fall on the ball before the 49ers could get to it.
It doesn’t get much easier for Devin Lloyd than the interception Purdy threw to him on the first play after a Jaguars punt midway through the third quarter. Purdy trusted the scheme and threw to a window that wasn’t open and his pass hit Lloyd in the chest for the 49ers’ third turnover of the game.

Whatever injury was ailing Jennings didn’t last long. He was back on the field for the 49ers’ next offensive series
Jennings took a huge shot on the two-point conversion and was slow to get up. The wide receiver made his way to the medical tent before laying down on the sideline with an apparent injury to his right ribs or oblique.
The 49ers offense finally put together a touchdown drive against a strong Jacksonville defense. San Francisco capped an eight-play, 73-yard drive with an eight-yard touchdown catch from Christian McCaffrey on a well-designed shovel pass from Brock Purdy. Jauan Jennings came up big with a tough contested catch on the two-point conversion to cut Jacksonville’s lead to 17-14. Jennings was shaken up on the play after taking a huge hit from a pair of Jags defenders.
San Francisco’s defense badly needed a stop with the Jaguars ahead 17-6 to start the third quarter. Jacksonville got into a fourth-and-1 near midfield and went for it, but left tackle Walker Little jumped early to draw a false start penalty and move the Jaguars into a fourth-and-6 and a punt.
The 49ers defense and special teams failed again to close the first half. Their special teams unit gave up a 52-yard kick return after a short field goal from the 49ers offense cut the score to 14-6. Then Jacksonville’s offense cruised into easy field goal range to take the three points back before the half. It’s 17-6, Jacksonville at halftime, and they’ll get the ball to open the third quarter.
The 49ers got points before the end of the first half, but they stalled out in the red zone for the second time in a series that was indicative of the entire first half. San Francisco fought uphill the entire way and both times they got into goal-to-go situations in the first half they settled for short field goals from Eddy Pineiro. Any sign of life is a plus for the 49ers.
San Francisco badly needed to find some kind of offensive spark and they got it with a trick play late in the first half. Brock Purdy threw a slant to Ricky Pearsall who immediately lateraled to Christian McCaffrey for a 23-yard gain into the red zone.
San Francisco needed to respond after the Jaguars touchdown. Their answer was barely a whisper. They went just five yards on three plays and then got a dreadful punt from Thomas Morstead. The first 30 minutes couldn’t be going much worse for the home team.
Jacksonville is making easy work of the 49ers defense, and the 49ers offense can’t stop giving the ball away. Two San Francisco turnovers have turned into 14 points for the Jaguars who now lead 14-3 after Trevor Lawrence hit tight end Hunter Long for an easy touchdown.
Shanahan had perhaps the worst stretch of plays in his coaching career early in the second quarter. They 49ers accepted a second-and-12 holding penalty on an incomplete pass that gave Jacksonville an extra down. It appears Shanahan wanted to decline it, so he called a timeout to argue a play that could not be changed. Then he challenged an inconclusive 28-yard catch on the ensuing third-and-long to burn a second timeout in two plays.
Brock Purdy found Christian McCaffrey for a big gain on a first-and-10 throw, but the throw bounced off of McCaffrey’s hands and into the arms of Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd. It’s the second turnover of the day for the 49ers and the 11th takeaway of the season for the Jacksonville defense.
Wow.
It was easy work for Jacksonville after they forced a turnover. They went 47 yards on one play with RB Travis Etienne racing around the left side untouched for a touchdown. Embarrassing pair of plays for the 49ers as the visitors take a 7-3 lead.
Apparently the 49ers didn’t read the scouting report on the Jaguars defense. Tight end Luke Farrell had the ball punched out after a catch-and-run. Jacksonville has now forced 10 turnovers this season.
It appeared entering Sunday the 49ers and Jaguars were two evenly-matched teams. Things played out that way through the first 15 minutes with the 49ers racking up 72 yards on 15 plays and Jacksonville posting 48 yards on 12 plays.
Jacksonville got its run game going early with running back Travis Etienne ripping off 13 yards on three carries and quarterback Trevor Lawrence converting a fourth-and-1 with a QB sneak. However, they stalled out at the 49ers’ 40 thanks to a miscue from wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. where he didn’t successfully get a second foot in bounds on a third-and-13 throw.
Green is dealing with a neck injury and was ruled out before the game. Darrell Luter Jr. started in his stead with Deommodore Lenoir and Upton Stout.
San Francisco settled for a short field goal by Eddy Pineiro who connected from 26 yards out to give the 49ers a 3-0 lead. It was a strong series for the 49ers. They went 57 yards in 13 plays, but couldn’t capitalize after getting a first-and-goal at the Jacksonville 9. Brock Purdy went four-for-six for 30 yards. Christian McCaffrey carried four times for 18 yards and caught two passes for three yards.
San Francisco is cruising on its opening drive with 41 yards on six plays, but it was halted by an injury to tight end Jake Tonges. He was slow to get up a second-and-8 run by Brian Robinson. Tonges is officially questionable to return.

The 49ers will have Pearsall in uniform Sunday. He was questionable with a knee injury and was limited throughout the week in practice. He was not among the team’s inactives.
Jennings is officially active after missing Week 3 with shoulder and ankle injuries. He didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday, but was back for a limited session Friday. He was not among the team’s inactive players announced 90 minutes before kickoff. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Jennings will have a limited role.

49ers vs. Jaguars predictions
The experts mostly like the 49ers in Week 4. That may be even more true with more certainty about the quarterback position for San Francisco. We’re leaning toward the home team in Week 4 thanks to their higher-end talent and their consistency on both sides of the ball this season. It’s probably going to be a rock fight and the 49ers get more benefit of the doubt when it comes to winning an ugly game. 49ers 23, Jaguars 17
