San Francisco Giants Make Decision On Bruce Bochy Reunion

Bruce Bochy waves to fans during a Giants game on September 20, 2019.

On Wednesday October 1, 2025, San Francisco Giants President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey admitted the Giants are not looking to hire Bruce Bochy as their next manager.

“I don’t even know what [Bochy’s] plans are, but the way things are coming to picture in my mind with where we want to go next, I don’t see us going that way with Boch,” Posey said in his end-of-season press conference.

Bochy mutually agreed to part ways with the Texas Rangers the same day that the Giants dismissed Bob Melvin, on Monday September 29, 2025. In the aftermath of both coaching moves, rumors swirled about a potential reunion between Bochy, Posey and the Giants.

Posey said the Giants are always open to bringing Bochy back in a different role. The Rangers also offered Bochy a front office role.

Bochy was obviously the most headline-grabbing managerial candidate for the Giants, given his history of managing three World Series winning teams in San Francisco from 2010-2014 with Posey as his star player.

Why Aren’t The Giants Considering Bochy?

The main reason why Bochy is not a match for the Giants is his age.

Just a few weeks into the 2025 season, Bochy will turn 71 years old. Unless Bochy wants to go the Connie Mack route and manage until he’s 87, the Giants couldn’t really expect more than a couple good years out of Bochy before he retires.

Remember, Bochy initially retired from baseball back in 2019, his last season with the Giants. If he was content to hang up the cleats way back then, why should baseball fans expect him to manage into his 80s?

The other reason is managerial style. Melvin, who the Giants just fired after he went 161-163 in two seasons, is essentially the closest person the Giants could have had at the helm to Bochy. A former backup catcher who has a traditional style and guarded personality.

Remember, Bochy was very successful with the Giants from 2010-2016 with four playoff appearances and the three world series titles. But the end of his Giants tenure was not good. The Giants couldn’t manage to win more than 77 games from 2017-2019, and had an ugly 64-98 record in 2017.

The Giants will likely want to pursue someone with more youth and energy to helm their team.

Who Are Some Other Managerial Candidates?

Buster Posey said at his press conference Wednesday that he has already talked to multiple prospective managerial candidates about the opening in San Francisco.

But which people could he be looking at to be the next skipper of the Giants?

A few former Giants have been popular names to take over for Bochy, including Buster Posey’s former backup catcher Nick Hundley and former Giants outfielder Mark DeRosa.

Hundley and DeRosa have also been tied to openings with the Rangers and Atlanta Braves, respectively.

DeRosa is a particularly intriguing candidate because he was the skipper for Team USA in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

The rumored candidate most opposite to Bochy is current University of Tennessee manager Tony Vitello.

Tennessee Baseball Head Coach Tony Vitello has been linked to the San Francisco Giants by The Athletic:

Current Giants Manager Bob Melvin faces an “uncertain future”, and Vitello has been named as a a possible candidate to replace him.

Vitello lacks big league experience, but is a popular figure among baseball fans because of his energy. He has also managed several of the Giants top prospects in college including Drew Gilbert and Blade Tidwell.

Giants fans, who do you think San Francisco will hire as their next manager?
