The San Francisco 49ers came out hot against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night at SoFi Stadium and took a 17-7 lead into halftime. They stumbled their way through the second half but figured out a way to steal a win in overtime.
San Francisco’s victory keeps them atop the NFC West at 4-1 overall with a 3-0 record in the division. It was a massive win with injuries depleting their roster on both sides of the ball, but they managed to find a way to claw out a victory.

Bourne had a rough Week 4 vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars, but he came through in a major way with Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings out. The former 49ers undrafted rookie caught 10 of his 11 targets for 142 yards.
McCaffrey had a predictably busy night. The 49ers run game continues to be a problem as he carried 22 times for 57 yards. He also grabbed eight of his nine targets for 82 yards and a touchdown.
The 49ers backup QB moved to 3-0 on the season with a gritty performance where he played through a rash of injuries to grind out a victory. He completed 33-of-49 throws for 342 yards with two touchdowns and no turnovers. Unbelievable performance from the 2021 first-round pick.
The 49ers defense stood tall when the Rams challenged them in overtime. On fourth-and-1 in field goal range, the Rams opted not to kick a game-tying field goal and instead tried to extend their drive. San Francisco’s defense was equal to the task.
It looked like San Francisco was going in to score a touchdown to open overtime, but Mac Jones was sacked on a second down and under heavy pressure on third down before throwing the ball away and giving way to Eddy Pineiro, who just squeezed a 41-yard field goal inside the left upright.
The 49ers played things safe after getting the ball back and it came back to bite them. Los Angeles cruised into field goal range and drilled a 47-yard field goal to send the game to OT. It was a mostly easy drive for LA who converted a fourth-and-3 to get into easier field goal range.
WOW. The 49ers offense has work to do, but Collins kept the Rams out of the end zone by punching the ball away from running back Kyren Williams at the goal line. San Francisco recovered at their own 1 for a massive turnover to keep a 23-20 lead.
San Francisco looked primed to run the game clock way down Thursday night, but their drive stalled out and they had to settle for a 59-yard field goal. The 49ers were lucky Mac Jones’s third-and-10 pass wasn’t intercepted. Two Rams players had a chance to grab it, but it fell to the turf and gave San Francisco some life. Pineiro’s career-long 59-yard field goal put the 49ers ahead 23-20 with 2:52 left. The 49ers defense has struggled in the second half. One more stop could do it, though.
The 49ers were in the shadow of their own goal post and Mac Jones found his favorite target, Bourne for a massive first down on a third-and-1. He’s now at 10 catches for 143 yards.
The Rams got a clutch punt from Ethan Evans, who pinned San Francisco at their own 2 with 8:04 left in a tie game. San Francisco has gone 24 yards in 10 plays on their last two series. They need a long drive that ends in points if they’re looking to steal a win at SoFi Stadium.
San Francisco’s injury-depleted defense has nothing for the Rams. They took the 49ers punt and went 88 yards on nine plays to tie Thursday’s game on a touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford to Kyren Williams. It was Williams’ second touchdown of the night. It looked like Dee Winters dove for an interception, which was not the correct play to make for the young linebacker. The extra point was blocked on a huge special teams play for San Francisco to keep LA from taking the lead. Jordan Elliott broke through the middle of the line and got a hand on the extra point try.
Thursday Night Football sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung reported Gross-Matos is out for the game due to the hamstring injury he sustained on the Rams last drive. The 49ers are thin on the defensive line.
San Francisco is clinging to a six-point lead. They’ll open the fourth quarter facing a third-and-1 from their own 47. They converted a key fourth down in their own territory to extend their six-play, 20-yard drive. They’re bleeding a ton of clock every time they have the ball. They’ve run 58 plays to LA’s 35, and they’ve had the ball for 27:53 of the game’s 45 minutes.
San Francisco’s defense was good early in Thursday’s game, but the Rams appear to have figured them out. LA answered the 49ers field goal with a seven-play, 69-yard drive for a touchdown. Puka Nacua capped the drive with a touchdown grab from one yard out. It’s 20-14 and the 49ers’ hold on the game is slipping rapidly. A 34-yard grab by Tutu Atwell on a second-and-10 was the play that keyed the scoring drive.
Gross-Matos appeared to come up favoring his hamstring during a pass rush. He’s been dealing with a knee injury that’s been limiting him to one day of practice per week. He walked off the field under his own power.
San Francisco got it to the 1, but they couldn’t punch in a touchdown that would’ve put the 49ers ahead by three scores. However, a field goal puts them up 13 points with 6:33 to go after the Rams missed a field goal. Any points the 49ers offense can rack up with their number of injuries on that side of the ball is a win.
Jones banged up his knee a bit early on the 49ers’ drive after the Rams missed field goal. He was seen limping down the field after a long completion and didn’t appear to be moving well while favoring the left knee he’s wearing a brace on after suffering an injury in the preseason. Adrian Martinez, who has yet to play a regular season NFL snap, would be the QB if Jones can’t continue. Jones did jog off the field according to reporters at SoFi Stadium.
Bourne is cooking. He’s up to 99 yards with six catches on seven targets. It’s clear Mac Jones has a ton of faith in him.
The 49ers needed to stay healthy against the Rams, but Davis suffered a hand injury in the first half and was shown on the sideline during the television broadcast in street clothes to open the second half, so his night is over.
LA’s first drive of the second half was strong, but stalled out thanks to drops from wide receiver Jordan Whittington and running back Kyren Williams. As a result they settled for a 53-yard field goal that kicker Joshua Karty pushed wide right, giving San Francisco prime field position at their own 43 to start their first series of the second half. Points on this series would be massive.
The 49ers executed a perfect two-minute drill to end the first half against LA. They went 48 yards in 12 plays and capped a tremendous first 30 minutes with a 37-yard field goal from Eddy Pineiro to go ahead 10 points at halftime. LA will get the ball at the start of the third quarter, so points before the half was big for San Francisco.
It took a couple series, but the Rams offense is finally really cruising. They used a ton of play action and rolled 85 yards in just eight plays behind some excellent work from quarterback Matthew Stafford who was nearly perfect on the drive. He hit tight end Terrence Ferguson for 21 yards on a third down, then 22 yards to wide receiver Jordan Whittington and an 11-yard strike to Whittington. Then he hit running back Kyren Williams for a 14-yard touchdown. It was about as easy as things could get for LA. The TD made it a 14-7 49ers lead just before the two-minute warning.
The Rams offense was cruising into the red zone, but their eight-play, 45-yard drive was cut short when a pair of reserve defensive ends came up with big plays for San Francisco. DE Sam Okuayinonu busted through on a first-down run and seemed to alter running back Blake Corum’s attempt to catch a toss from Matthew Stafford. He dropped the ball and DE Trevis Gipson, who was called up from the practice squad before Thursday’s game, fell on it for a big-time takeaway for San Francisco’s defense.
17 plays. 91 yards. What a drive from the 49ers to take 14-0 lead on the road at SoFi Stadium. Mac Jones hit McCaffrey for a one-yard TD to cap the big-time series. McCaffrey has 13 touches for 68 yards to open the game. The key play on the drive was a big-time throw from Jones to Demarcus Robinson on a third-and-9 to keep the drive alive and set up the McCaffrey touchdown.
San Francisco dominated the first 15 minutes of play Thursday night. They picked up 139 yards on 22 plays and held the ball for 11:50. The Rams had seven yards on six plays. Things aren’t likely to continue going this well for the 49ers, but it’s about as good of a start as they could have asked for. They’ll open the second quarter with third-and-9 at the Rams 24 in the midst of a 14-play, 67-yard drive. The 49ers tried a little trickery with a fancy screen pass to Christian McCaffrey, who has four catches for 43 yards.
San Francisco’s defense did a nice job on its first drive thanks in part to a well-timed blitz call from defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. Rookie safety Marquise Sigle flew in off the edge while Huff worked inside and raced through the line to hit Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford for an 11-yard loss to bring up a third-and-21. LA opted to run it on third down and finished the series with a punt. Huff’s sack was the type of big play the 49ers are going to need if they’re going to swing an upset at SoFi Stadium.
The 49ers couldn’t ask for more on their first series. They went 72 yards on eight plays and capped the drive with a six-yard touchdown pass from Mac Jones to Jake Tonges. Christian McCaffrey touched the ball five times for 40 yards, and Jones completed all five of his throws for 77 yards.
It was a heavy workload for Christian McCaffrey early in the 49ers’ opening drive, but wide receiver Kendrick Bourne had the big pickup to get San Francisco into the red zone. He turned a short throw on a first-and-20 into a 35-yard pickup thanks to a strong run after the catch.

49ers vs. Rams predictions
It’s difficult to envision the 49ers overcoming the rash of injuries that have obliterated their starting offense. LA has a stingy defense to begin with. Mac Jones starting without wide receivers Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings could mean a long day for the 49ers’ offense, and we saw in Week 4 what a long day for the offense means for San Francisco’s defense. Rams 41, 49ers 10
