MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — In 2024, then Tennessee Head Baseball Coach Tony Vitello pumped his fist in the air, after the Volunteers defeated Texas A&M 6-5 in a winner-take-all Game 3 of the Men’s College World Series.
The win, marked the first in program history for the Vols, and put Vitello confidently at the top of the College Baseball World.

Now, the former Tennessee head coach will make the jump to the professional level, accepting a deal to be the skipper of the San Francisco Giants.
Vitello becomes the first collegiate coach to jump to the professional level without any prior pro experience. This year, Vitello guided the Volunteers to their sixth-straight Super Regional appearance, but fell to the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Vitello finishes his Tennessee tenure with a record of 341-131 with three College World Series appearances. From 2018-2025, Tennessee saw 52 players drafted, including 10 in the first round.
WKRG News 5 Sports Anchor Gerhard Mathangani and Digital Video Producer Patrick Walsh talked about Vitello’s time in Knoxville and his next opportunity on Southeast Sports +.
