Should these players stay or be dealt before the deadline?
USA TODAY Sports’ Joe Rivera and Chirs Bumbaca break down which players might be traded before the 2025 NFL trade deadline on November 4th.
Good luck spooking a San Francisco 49ers fan this weekend.
Scary injuries to franchise stars Nick Bosa and Fred Warner ended their seasons early while All-Pro tight end George Kittle and second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall have missed multiple weeks.
The 49ers have spent most of the year without franchise quarterback Brock Purdy after he suffered a long-lasting toe injury in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks. He returned for a spot start against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4 but aggravated the injury and hasn’t taken the field since.
Former first-round pick Mac Jones has played well in his stead. He has led the 49ers to a 5-3 mark through eight weeks and kept them in contention in a competitive NFC West division.
Last week’s loss to the Houston Texans dropped the 49ers one game behind the Los Angeles Rams and Seahawks in the loss column. Both of those teams were on a bye in Week 8 and that moves San Francisco out of first place in the division.
The 49ers will look to get back in the win column at the New York Giants this weekend. This is the team’s second road game in a row as they play four away games out of six heading into a Week 14 bye.
Will Purdy be in the lineup for the 49ers in New York? Here’s what we know.
Is Brock Purdy playing Week 9?
Purdy will miss yet another start in Week 9, per multiple reports. Jones will get the nod in his place but 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy will be available to play if needed.
It’s a good sign that he is listed as questionable instead of out as he had been since Week 4. That means he’s recovered enough to play if the quarterbacks ahead of him were injured during the game.
The game’s location will also be a likely consideration. A season-ending injury to Giants star wide receiver Malik Nabers raised more questions about the turf at MetLife Stadium, the venue for Sunday’s 49ers-Giants game.
In Week 6, the Philadelphia Eagles decided to sit star defensive lineman Jalen Carter partly because the game was at MetLife Stadium. He was questionable with a heel injury – he’s since returned to the field – and opted against making it worse on a short week. NFL analyst Ian Rapoport said “the turf at MetLife Stadium played a part in (Carter’s) decision.”
The 49ers will be at home for a key matchup against the Rams in Week 10. San Francisco might eye that date for a potential return for their franchise quarterback.
49ers QB depth chart
Jones did appear on the team’s injury report with a knee injury but was a full participant in practice all week. Martinez has not seen the field for the 49ers this season after signing to the team’s practice squad following training camp cuts.
Rourke is not expected to play at all this season.
