Right before the start of the 2025 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers made a surprise trade, acquiring running back Brian Robinson Jr. from the Washington Commanders for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft.

So far this season, Christian McCaffrey has been one of the best running backs in the league, totaling 1,222 yards and eight touchdowns through nine games, leaving Robinson as the clear backup.

However, on Sunday against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium, Robinson had his best day of the year by far, rushing for 53 yards and a touchdown on an incredible 10.6 yards per attempt.

After the game, 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams was asked about giving Robinson a bit of an extra celebration after the score.

“He had always says ‘You know, I don’t always get a lot of carries, but today, I feel like I’m going to make the most of it when I do touch the ball.’ Just to see him actually make the most of it every time he touched the ball, it’s one thing when a guy says he’s going to do something. It’s another thing when he does it,” Williams said. “Christian doesn’t leave a lot of crumbs on the table. He understands his role. He just always being ready to go, coming in running with an attitude and never gives the defense a chance to relax.”

McCaffrey had another great game has well, rushing for 106 yards and a touchdown and catching five passes for 67 yards and a another touchdown. He had some kind words to say about Robinson after the game as well.

“It was awesome,” McCaffrey said. “He runs so hard, and it feels like this whole season, you could tell he’s itching and might not be the way he wants it to be right now, but to have him is huge for me. It means a lot to me. He pushed me and the way he runs, if we can continue to get that flow of the game in there, I’m really excited. You couldn’t ask for a guy to have a better attitude to come into work every day and to have that mindset and to keep pushing. So, I’m really pumped he’s in our room and I think it’s only going to get better.”

Robinson shared his feelings about his first touchdown on the field with team reporter Briana Jeannel.

“It was just a relief,” Robinson said. “I’ve just been working since I got here. Just working every day just for that moment, for that opportunity to get in the end zone. I just felt relieved by finally crossing that goal line.”

Robinson has actually been much more efficient than McCaffrey this year, averaging 4.8 yards per attempt compared to McCaffrey’s 3.5. This just means that if McCaffrey ever misses time with an injury, or just needs to rest, the 49ers are in great hands with Robinson lining up behind Mac Jones or Brock Purdy.
