Mayor London N. Breed smiled today as she stood before city officials and community members to unveil Bayfront Park, the new green jewel between the Chase Center and San Francisco Bay. Joining forces with Supervisor Matt Dorsey and Port Executive Director Elaine Forbes, Mayor Breed lauded the park’s opening as a landmark achievement in revamping Mission Bay into a neighborhood brimming with housing and hospitals and lush open spaces for everyone to enjoy. Breed’s enthusiasm was palpable as she said, “I am thrilled to see this area transform from what was once a strip of dirt to become such an amazing park for residents and visitors to enjoy,” according to the City and County of San Francisco.
Bayfront Park sprawls over 5.4 acres and boasts various features designed to withstand climate change, from resilient landscaping to stormwater management gardens. It’s part of the original Mission Bay Master Plan dating back to 1998, which sparked the transformation of Mission Bay into a vibrant hub dotted with over 6,200 housing units, commercial spaces, and, notably, state-of-the-art health centers and the home turf of the seven-time NBA champion Golden State Warriors. Furthermore, plans to plant a restaurant or concession area in the park promise to liven up the space further.
San Francisco’s waterfront has seen a blossoming of new parks in the last few years, but Bayfront Park is poised to be a central piece in this verdant patchwork. It connects to adjacent green spaces like Agua Vista Park and showcases the area’s former maritime industrial tone by repurposing steel from the old Bay Bridge into design elements. “This highly anticipated park will not only serve as a dynamic hub for recreation and events but will also provide a stunning backdrop for the Chase Center and surrounding businesses at Thrive City,” Supervisor Dorsey told the City and County of San Francisco, underscoring its transformative impact on the Mission Bay community.
OCII Executive Director Thor Kaslofsky pointed to the park’s future as a favorite locale for neighbors and visitors, celebrated its waterfront oasis vibe, and highlighted its convenient access via existing and upcoming transport links. On the sports front, Golden State Warriors President Brandon Schneider expressed excitement about how the park enhances the Chase Center experience. “We are proud to have hosted nearly five million fans at over 400 events since Chase Center’s opening, creating an estimated $4.2 billion in economic impact for San Francisco,” Schneider said via City and County of San Francisco News, showcasing the synergy between the Warriors and the city’s urban planning efforts.
