In their third go-around, Marin Catholic needed overtime to defeat Acalanes, 15-13, in the first round of North Coast Section Division II play on Wednesday at host site San Domenico. The seventh-seeded Wildcats (13-10) will next face No. 2 Foothill in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Nikolai Federoff scored two goals, both in overtime, to lift the Wildcats past the Dons. Charles Cain netted five goals, including one in overtime, and Beau Panzica scored four goals for Marin Catholic, which already held two regular-season wins over Acalanes.
Jake Colletto came on strong late, as he scored the tying goal with 11 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, then scored the last goal of overtime. Kylan and Rohan KIime also scored for Marin Catholic. Wildcats netminder Sebastien Drucker held tough in the back-and-forth contest.
Michael Yoder gave the host Wildcats an early boost with three goals in the first quarter and No. 3 Marin Academy went on to defeat No. 14 Vintage, 14-4, in Wednesday’s NCS D-II opening round. Marin Academy (14-9) will face No. 6 Heritage (15-6) in Saturday’s quarterfinals. Matthieu Giauque led Marin Academy with four goals, while Jack Buchanan and Justin Tachiki each scored three goals. Lachlan Baldauf had 12 blocks in the wildcats net, and Rali Greene bolstered the defense with five blocks.
Novato scored twice in overtime for a 17-15 victory over No. 8 Clayton Valley Charter in Concord during Wednesday’s NCS D-II opening round. The No. 9 Hornets (10-16) have a tough test ahead, with top-seeded Cardinal Newman in Saturday’s quarterfinals. The Cardinals beat No. 16 St. Pat’s of Vallejo, 19-6, at San Domenico.
Girls water polo
No. 5 Terra Linda advanced to the NCS D-II quarterfinals with Wednesday’s 13-8 victory over No. 12 Newark Memorial, at host Marin Academy. The Trojans (12-11) will face No. 4 Livermore (12-10) on Saturday. Livermore was a 9-7 winner against No. 13 Vintage at Marin Academy.
Josephine Fetterman Riggle led the Trojans with five goals, while Emily Erickson tallied four goals, two assists and three steals. Jessa Dunn came through with three goals and an assist, and Sadie Messick had a goal and two assists for the Trojans.
Second-seeded Marin Catholic cruised past No. 15 American Canyon, 18-7, in Wednesday’s NCS D-II opening round at San Domenico. The Wildcats (14-9) won a regular-season meeting with the Wolves, 13-4, on Oct. 5. Marin Catholic advances to Saturday’s quarterfinals, when they will face the winner of Wednesday’s battle between No. 7 Granada and No. 10 Heritage.
No. 9 San Marin held off No. 8 Clayton Valley Charter, 9-7, in Concord during Wednesday’s NCS D-II opening round action. The Mustangs (15-8) earned a quarterfinal matchup with top-seeded James Logan on Saturday.
Women’s water polo
College of Marin gave up nine goals in the first period, but that was all, as the Mariners rallied for a 19-9 victory over San Francisco City College in Wednesday’s postseason opener at IVC.
Delaney Mannor scored eight goals on 10 shots for the Mariners, who got five goals, four assists and four steals from Anabelle Phillips. Marlee Ostrom added four goals, three assists and four steals, and Allie Pierotti came through with two goals, two assists and three steals for the Mariners (8-7). Marin goalkeeper Marie Fehring had 19 saves.
Girls golf
Marin Academy juniors Sterling Colpitts and Elsa Anderson and freshman Kelly Lundgren were all named to the All-Bay Counties League first team, along with San Domenico sophomores Mila Dawson and Lola Hu.
Wildcats junior Piper Marmer and senior Genevieve Zeches were named to the second team, as was Panthers senior Maya Bar-Cohen.
