Albert K. Chin, MD, has spent over 35 years working in the field of medical technologies, having earned a great deal of acclaim and accolades in the process. Dr. Chin now works as the chief innovation officer and co-founder of many medical startup companies, including FemDx, Medsystems, TAS Medical, PercAssist and Orare Medsystems.
Through each of these companies, Dr. Chin continues to drive medical and technological innovation first-hand, as he also fulfills the role of the primary inventor of the technologies being sold. He has a total of over 230 patents to his name and 14 different medical technological products that he has brought to market over the course of his career. Dr. Chin’s inventions have played crucial roles in numerous medical procedures, with his work directly contributing to the saving of multiple lives.
Dr. Chin began his career in 1978 as a cardiovascular researcher working under Thomas J. Fogarty, MD. Dr. Fogarty was a surgeon and medical device inventor whose own work helped to inspire Dr. Chin’s journey. Since then, Dr. Chin has founded numerous startup companies, including Saphena Medical, InnoVein, nVision Medical, Pavilion Medical Innovations and Cruzar Medsystems. In addition to founding these companies, Dr. Chin previously held the position of chief innovation officer at Pavilion Medical Innovations and Maquet Cardiovascular, formerly Boston Scientific Cardiac Surgery. He spent almost two decades as vice president of research at Guidant Cardiac Surgery, formerly Origin Medsystems.
Dr. Chin is an honorary member of the Association of Physician Assistants in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (APACVS). He gained recognition for his contributions to the field, specifically his invention of the device for Endoscopic Vein Harvesting (EVH). “That was my biggest career achievement,” said Dr. Chin.
One of the largest projects Dr. Chin is working on is “making an artificial heart device that does not require open heart surgery.” Utilizing a needle stuck underneath the sternum, Dr. Chin’s latest invention blends established methods with modern technology to reach new heights.
As Dr. Chin explains, “The electrophysiologist started using a needle stick that would go underneath the sternum in the chest. They guide the needle into the pericardial sac. Then, they would do mapping and ablation for arrhythmia. I’m using that approach to put in a balloon catheter that inflates to compress the ventricle. It can be used in advanced and end stage heart failure.”
Dr. Chin attributes his success to a commitment to continuous learning. Early in life, he vowed to challenge himself to think about device design for at least 15 minutes daily. He did this continuously and meticulously until he taught his brain to begin generating those ideas naturally.
Dr. Chin’s work has been recognized with several awards over the years. He received the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine Dean’s Award for Research in 1983, the Stanford University Emerging Entrepreneurs in Biomedical Technology Ideals of Entrepreneurship Award in 2007 and the Boston Patent Law Association’s Invented Here! Top Award in 2018.
As a thought leader in the medical technology industry, Dr. Chin has contributed significantly to the field. He has shared his expertise in over 100 presentations at universities and conferences, both nationally and internationally. He has also written dozens of articles in esteemed medical journals such as Surgery, Surgical Forum and Circulation. Furthermore, Dr. Chin has authored chapters of books on surgery and medical technology.
