CLEVELAND, Ohio — When the NBA All-Star reserves were announced on Jan. 30, giving the Cavs three participants in the weekend in San Francisco on Feb. 16, energy was high in the Cavs’ locker room.
After their 137-115 win over the Atlanta Hawks that night, Donovan Mitchell let the excitement of having two of his teammates joining him in the All-Star Game get the best of him.
Mitchell, who was selected as an All-Star starter on Jan. 23 and will make his sixth appearance, hinted in his postgame interview that the trio would be competing in events during the break together. Darius Garland was hesitant to confirm the news, possibly because he hadn’t chosen which particular event he’d be participating in at the time.
Now the news is official.
Evan Mobley, who was selected for his first All-Star Game, and Mitchell will participate in the Skills Challenge that features four teams of two.
Garland will participate in the 3-point contest.
The tandem of Mitchell and Mobley will compete against three teams, including:
Team Rooks: Zaccharie Risacher & Alex SarrTeam Spurs: Chris Paul & Victor WembanyamaTeam Warriors: Draymond Green & Moses Moody
The last time Mobley participated in the Skills Challenge was in 2022, when the NBA moved to the team format for the event. With Garland and Jarrett Allen by his side, they brought home the hardware, winning the entire competition.
Team Cavs will rely on Mobley’s experience and Mitchell’s skills to try and be the first team to win the event twice.
