USA Today included three California restaurants on its recent list of the 10 best new restaurants in the US that you need to try in 2025. San Francisco Chinese restaurant Z & Y Peking Duck was the sole Bay Area representative, coming in at No. 9.
Z & Y Peking Duck is the swanky new sister restaurant to Michelin Bib Gourmand-winner Z & Y Restaurant, which serves mouth-tingling Sichuan cuisine right across the street. The Chinatown restaurant from chef Lijun Han opened in late 2023, replacing previous Z & Y offshoot Z & Y Bistro, a ramen and skewers spot that closed in 2018. Z & Y Peking Duck specializes in Peking duck carved tableside (which you can order with caviar if you’re feeling extra-fancy), as well as xiao long bao and grilled sea bass.
Norikaya in Los Angeles was also among the California winners, crowned No. 6. The upscale, dimly lit Japanese restaurant in Koreatown splits its menu between hand rolls and izakaya dishes, from a lobster dynamite roll to fried squid with sweet cocktail sauce. Smoke Door Lake Tahoe Saryo, a Japanese restaurant in Kings Beach specializing in wood-fired cooking, was No. 4. Smoke Door has offered everything from a unique interpretation of avocado toast made with tamari-soaked bread to fresh fish hand-picked from the Toyosu fish market in Tokyo.
USA Today selected its winners by asking a panel of food and travel experts to nominate their 20 favorite new restaurants that opened in the past 1.5 years. Readers then voted on these selections to pick the top 10.
