The San Francisco 49ers are trying to recalibrate how and where they allocate their money in 2025 and beyond.
Part of the reason for that shift is illustrated by Over the Cap, which lists the 49ers with an NFL-high $65,517,048 in cap charges for non-roster players (dead money). The next team on the list is the Philadelphia Eagles, who owe $52,131,941. Last is the Pittsburgh Steelers at $45,335.
It’s nigh impossible to build an NFL team without any dead money, and not all of the 49ers’ dead cap charges are egregious. Some are rookies that didn’t pan out, others are veterans who had big money contracts restructured to kick cap charges down the road.
Here’s a rundown of each non-roster player with dead money that will cost the 49ers. OTC’s list still doesn’t include defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, who will carry a $7,375,000 million dead cap charge this season and $17,485,000 next season.
WR Deebo Samuel: $31,020,600
The 49ers could have designated Samuel as a post-June 1 release and spread his dead cap hit out over two years. By trading him, they wrapped all his remaining dead money into the 2025 season. Samuel will be the most expensive player against the cap for San Francisco this season.
DL Arik Armstead: $15,072,646
Armstead was let go last offseason when he chose not to agree to a reduced contract with the 49ers. He wound up signing a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
CB Charvarius Ward: $12,298,000
The 49ers restructured Ward’s contract in March of 2023 to clear cap space. He’s an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and even though he’s unlikely to stay with San Francisco, he’ll still cost them more against the cap than all but four players on their active roster.
LB De’Vondre Campbell: $2,680,000
This dead cap is due to the way the 49ers structured his one-year deal last offseason, not because he quit on the team when the player he was brought in to replace returned.
LB Dre Greenlaw: $1,864,766
The 49ers structured Greenlaw’s two-year, $16.4 million contract with void years to spread out some of his salary cap charges.
CB Isaac Yiadom: $1,100,000
Yiadom’s one-year deal was also structured with void years to kick some money beyond the 2024 season.
OL Jon Feliciano: $470,000
Feliciano’s one-year contract last year had some dead money built in. He retired this offseason.
TE Cameron Latu: $428,756
Latu was a third-round pick by the 49ers in the 2023 draft. He was cut last season and will cost the 49ers small amounts against the cap because of his rookie contract.
WR Danny Gray: $212,255
Gray was a third-round pick in the 2022 draft. He’ll also carry dead money because of his rookie deal.
OL Jarrett Kingston: $103,791
The 49ers were unable to hold onto Kingston after selecting him in the sixth round last year. Rookie deal, dead money, etc.
