The San Francisco 49ers and recently-released former Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa are a good match on paper. It sounds now like they’re taking steps toward making that union a reality.
The SF Standard’s Tim Kawakami on Sunday reported the 49ers and Bosa are “having good conversations and this feels like it’s headed toward a deal.” He also reported Bosa and his younger brother, 49ers DE Nick Bosa, want to play on the same team.
Bosa and the 49ers are allowed to have talks before the legal negotiating window opened because he was recently released by the Los Angeles Chargers, the team that selected him No. 3 overall in the 2016 NFL draft. By letting him go early, the Chargers opened the door for Bosa to talk with other teams immediately instead of waiting for his contract to officially expire at 9:00am Pacific Time on Monday.
While the elder Bosa can’t be the 49ers only move on the defensive line, he makes a ton of sense for them as a potential starter across from Nick Bosa. Injuries have plagued Joey for the last three years, but he got 14 games in last season after playing just 14 in the previous two seasons combined. A smaller role in San Francisco may allow him to stay healthier and more effective as he enters his age 30 season.
Depth at the defensive end spots was a weak point of the 49ers defense last year. Plugging Joey Bosa in with Nick, Leonard Floyd, Yetur Gross-Matos and perhaps another draft pick or two could give San Francisco a nice rotation at one of the most important positions on their roster.
