When YOLO Nightclub opened in 2021, taking the place of the legendary San Francisco club Slim’s, public backlash was swift. SFGATE reported on YOLO’s controversial social media posts, and KQED wrote an article titled “I Went to YOLO—the Nightclub That Replaced Slim’s—So You Don’t Have To.” This was also nearly a decade after peak usage of the acronym YOLO (as in, “you only live once.”).
Now, it appears that this club’s life is over.
KRON-TV first reported the closure of the venue, where the acts have primarily been EDM-centric over the years, but also included artists like YG, 2 Chainz and The Kid Laroi. On April 1, YOLO posted about the impending closure on Instagram, inviting patrons to come out for its “Finale Weekend” on Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12.
“Let’s share one last dance beneath our iconic chandelier and celebrate the memories we’ve created together,” the post read. The edited caption ended with “#NOTaprilfool.” No reason was given for the club’s abrupt shuttering.
Before it was reborn as YOLO, Slim’s had an illustrious 30-plus-year run in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood. Operated by former Steve Miller Band member Boz Scaggs, the club had countless world-renowned performers grace its stage, including Prince, David Bowie, No Doubt, Radiohead and many more. The club closed in March 2020.
On Saturday, the venue will close its doors again after a final show which will be headlined by Nurko, a “future bass” artist who has collaborated with ILLENIUM.
