Hear Henderson sum up his 9K MLB debut in front of family and friends

Hear Logan Henderson sum up his 9K MLB debut in front of family and friends. The Brewers routed the Oakland Athletics 14-1 on Sunday, April 20, 2025 at American Family Field in Milwaukee.

SAN FRANCISCO — Caleb Durbin provided another feel-good moment in his first days as a major-leaguer early on April 21.

But as the sun set Monday night at Oracle Park, so did the Milwaukee Brewers.

Quinn Priester struggled with his command in an abbreviated start, his defense didn’t play a clean game behind him and the bats, save for Durbin’s blast, went quiet into the night as the Brewers opened up a 10-game road trip with a 5-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

Milwaukee sent itself to defeat with a series of small, self-inflicted paper cuts.

BOX SCORE: Giants 5, Brewers 2

Take Jackson Chourio getting picked off of first base in the opening frame, potentially costing the Brewers a run.

Or take Joey Ortiz’s confounding decision to try and get an out at second base, throwing behind the base runner with nobody out in the second, when he had an easy play at first. That ended up contributing to the Giants scoring a run.

Or take Chourio’s throw home later in the inning when he had Heliot Ramos dead to rights at home if could make an on-target throw, but instead uncorked a heave 30 feet up the third-base line.

That’s not all, either. Rhys Hoskins whiffed on a throw in the fifth inning to allow a run to score and Brice Turang to, one batter later, couldn’t cleanly corral a hard-hit grounder that would have been a potential double play.

Mix in no hits over the final six innings from the offense and you have a recipe for a defeat to one of the better teams in the National League to open the season.

Giants come back to grab lead in sixth

Grant Anderson’s solid work out of the bullpen has landed him into leverage spots for manager Pat Murphy, but it didn’t continue into Monday. The right-hander left a first-pitch sinker over the middle of the plate that Wilmer Flores crushed to left for a go-ahead solo homer with two outs in the sixth.

Quinn Priester unable to work past four innings

Brewers right-hander Quinn Priester wasn’t able to deliver a third crisp outing in as many starts since being acquired. He allowed four walks through four-plus innings Monday, facing two batters in the fifth inning but allowing both to reach.

Priester battled enough to only allow two runs, though, with some help from Nick Mears who escaped the fifth the game still tied.

Caleb Durbin picks up his first home run, then makes spectacular play

It takes a lot to get a ball out at night in San Francisco, and Caleb Durbin got just enough of one for his first career home run.

Durbin connected with a 1-0 fastball from Robbie Ray in the top of the second inning and sent it out to left field for a two-run blast to open the scoring.

San Francisco got one back in a bizarre bottom of the second. Quinn Priester walked two as he struggled with his command early, shortstop Joey Ortiz turned down an easy out at first base for an ill-advised attempt to throw behind the runner at second on a ground ball and William Contreras then threw out his second attempted base stealer of the night.

And that wasn’t even all. On a Patrick Bailey two-out single, Jackson Chourio had a chance to throw out the slow-footed Heliot Ramos at home but delivered a poor throw home. The Brewers right fielder, though, then partially made up for it with a diving catch for the third out to save two runs from scoring.

Durbin then showcased some deft glove work in the bottom of the third, making a diving stop of a Willy Adames one-hop rocket behind the bag at third, sprawling to his feet and throwing to first for the out.
