The San Francisco 49ers still have a lot of questions to answer ahead of the 2025 NFL season. Obviously, the biggest of those questions has to do with starting quarterback Brock Purdy.
After the Purdy question, the 49ers could use more help on the defensive side of the football. Adding another cornerback could be a priority late in NFL free agency.

With that in mind, San Francisco has been linked to a very intriguing name.
Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News has suggested Stephon Gilmore as a potential option for the 49ers if John Lynch is looking to add to his secondary.
“The 49ers lost Charvarius Ward, and corner was the one position they didn’t focus on replenishing after their mass defensive exodus in free agency,” he wrote. “They should think about veteran mercenary Stephon Gilmore.”
Gilmore is still available late in free agency after playing a solid season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024.

Throughout the course of the 2024 season with the Vikings, Gilmore played in 15 games. He racked up 56 total tackles to go along with an interception and nine defended passes.

At 34 years old, Gilmore has played in 180 career games. He has totaled 617 tackles, 32 interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, 149 defended passes, and eight forced fumbles. Gilmore is still one of the most accomplished veteran cornerbacks in the league.
While this is just an idea and may not happen, Gilmore would be a wise addition for San Francisco. If the 49ers are serious about getting back into the playoffs, taking a swing on a player like Gilmore is well worth the minimal risk.
