Niners John Lynch provides update on negotiations with quarterback Brock Purdy
49ers general manager John Lynch reveals at NFL Combine that the team is in negotiations with Purdy’s folks to secure him as their quarterback for the future.
The San Francisco 49ers made it to Super Bowl 58 in 2023 but ultimately fell in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs. The team followed that Super Bowl loss with the first losing season in four years, going 6-11 and finishing last in the NFC West.
San Francisco faced a similar drop-off after their last Super Bowl trip in 2019. They went 6-10 the following season before getting back to the playoffs in 2021. They’ll look to bounce back in a similar fashion in 2025.
It’s been an offseason full of change for the 49ers, starting with the coaching staff. Defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen is out after one season, which saw the worst 49ers defense by points allowed in Kyle Shanahan’s tenure. San Francisco brought back Robert Saleh, who coordinated the defense from 2017-20, to take the reigns after his time with the New York Jets.
On a personnel level, the team will be without many notable players in 2025. San Francisco traded wide receiver Deebo Samuel to Washington. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw, safety Talanoa Hufanga, cornerback Charvarius Ward and guard Aaron Banks departed in free agency.
San Francisco made few notable moves in free agency. Arguably the biggest signings were quarterback Mac Jones and cornerback Tre Brown. The 49ers used the draft to reload on defense, selecting edge rusher Mykel Williams, defensive tackles Alfred Collins and CJ West, cornerback Upton Stout and linebacker Nick Martin with their first five picks of the draft.
That injection of talent on defense plus better health on offense in 2025 could help the 49ers get back to their winning ways.

San Francisco plays the Browns, Giants and Bears because they all finished last in their respective divisions in 2024.
