(KRON) – The City by the Bay is set to kick off a new men’s professional sports team. On Thursday, San Francisco’s Mayor Daniel Lurie announced on X that the city will be getting a new Major League Soccer Next Pro team.

The team will be called Golden City Football Club.

“Through a new partnership with Golden City FC and @sfrecpark [San Francisco Recreation & Parks], we will bring an MLS NEXT Pro team to Kezar Stadium,” explained Lurie.

According to the mayor, Golden City FC plans to invest $10 million in privately funded improvements to Kezar Stadium. In a video, Lurie posted on X, he said the stadium advancements include: the field, seating and a new scoreboard.

Lurie said the improvements will not result in changes to public access to the park.

“This announcement is more than just a new team—it represents a new era for San Francisco sports. The new GCFC team will bring new life to Kezar Stadium and the neighborhoods around it, and investments in the stadium will benefit the whole community,” said Mayor Lurie. “From business and retail to sports, it’s a good time to bet on San Francisco, and I’m thrilled to partner with MLS NEXT Pro to bring a new team to our city.”

MLS NEXT Pro was birthed in 2022. The league is comprised of 29 teams, 27 of which are MLS-affiliated and are independent.
