Improving the offensive line has been a difficult task for the San Francisco 49ers this offseason, but one of their handful of additions on the offensive front may not wind up happening.
Veteran offensive lineman DJ Humphries, 31, and the 49ers agreed to terms on a contract according to an April 29 tweet from his agency, AMDG Sports. Now NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco is reporting Humphries and the 49ers don’t have a contract in place.
Via NBC Sports Bay Area:
But that contract was not finalized, and nothing appears imminent. Humphries remains a free agent after appearing in just two games during the 2024 season due to injuries.
This helps explain why the 49ers announced the addition of two veteran offensive linemen, Andre Dillard and Nicholas Petit-Frere, a couple weeks after the Humphries deal was reported. San Francisco never officially announced Humphries joined the club.
There’s a chance Humphries lands a starting job with another team. He’s started all 100 games he’s played as a pro since the Arizona Cardinals selected him in the first round of the 2015 draft. Arizona released him last offseason after he tore his ACL in Week 17 of the 2023 campaign. Humphries joined the Kansas City Chiefs midway through last season and started games for them in Week 14 and Week 18.
San Francisco would’ve been able to comfortably slot Humphries into the swing tackle spot that was vacated by veteran Jaylon Moore this offseason.
Perhaps the 49ers and Humphries rekindle talks closer to training camp, but for now it doesn’t sound based on Maiocco’s reporting that there’ll be anything happening soon.
