Brock Purdy received a big contract extension from the San Francisco 49ers, and the reaction to the deal was not great. In fact, one harsh word trended in response to the deal.
Purdy is signing a 5-year, $265 million deal with the 49ers. The deal includes $181 million guaranteed and averages $53 million per year, which places Purdy among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.
Sports fans usually don’t agree on things, but there seemed to be consensus about one thing: Purdy was overpaid. The word “overpaid” began trending on X. Later, the phrase “holy overpay” began to trend on X.
LMAOOOOO most overpaid QB in NFL history
265m for an average game manager 😭

Comical overpay. Good for Brock Purdy, but pretty confident this contract will prevent the 49ers from being yearly Super Bowl contenders for the foreseeable future. https://t.co/yoe3VsNQHZ

Brock Purdy deal, to me, proves GMs and organizations are still clueless when it comes to QBs. Lol what an overpay for a system driven offense.

Are the Niners saying that Purdy is the best quarterback in the NFL? Is Purdy even saying so? No. But what they are saying is that Purdy is their guy, and they are comfortable paying him franchise QB money to keep him with the team for the next several years. This is an outcome that had been expected, and it’s finally here. Fans shouldn’t be surprised that the Niners extended Purdy, but they definitely have stick shock over the price.
