‘The Leader He’s Always Been!’ San Francisco 49ers Don’t Expect Anything Different from Brock Purdy originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The story of Brock Purdy is an incredible one.

After being the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, known affectionately as “Mr. Irrelevant,” Purdy led his team to the NFC championship game in his rookie season and a Super Bowl appearance in his second year.

In the three seasons since entering the league, he’s posted 9,518 yards and 64 touchdowns to 27 interceptions while completing 67.5 percent of his passes. He was set to enter 2025 on the final year of his rookie deal before signing a five-year contract extension for $265 million and a $40 million signing bonus.

That’s a far cry from the four-year, $3.7 million deal he signed as a rookie.

Purdy is set as the team’s quarterback of the future, and he’s expected to lead. But not just because of the new contract, as head coach Kyle Shanahan noted.

“I want him to be the leader he’s always been,” Shanahan said, via a transcript from the team. “There’s no worse thing to do than ask people to do something extra just because they’re a contract. You know, that’s when you start making stuff up. Brock’s earned his contract and he’s going to earn what he gets going forward.”

Shanahan spoke during a Thursday press conference and confirmed Purdy’s placement as the center of the franchise and the offense.

The former Iowa State Cyclone won’t be a new leader on the team, he just has to be the same vocal leader in the locker room and on the field that he’s been since being thrust into the starting role in 2022.
