Diamondbacks Fan Has Shocking Comments After Giants Incident

Dave McCaskill was honored by the Arizona Diamondbacks for his military service before a game against the San Francisco Giants on September 11, 2016.

It’s the play everyone in the baseball world is talking about.

On Monday June 30, 2025, an Arizona Diamondbacks fan interfered with a ball hit by San Francisco Giants infielder Christian Koss. The play was eventually ruled a ground-rule double, but very likely cost Koss and the Giants a home run.

After the incident, internet sleuths found FOUR other deep fly balls to left center field that the same fan had interfered with. The internet exploded, calling out the Diamondbacks for not banning this fan after several incidents and of course the fan himself for his repeated behavior.

But the fan didn’t back down or express remorse for his actions to the Giants. Instead, he has identified himself and tried to explain and defend his actions in public forums. The fan, named Dave McCaskill, took several interviews, but his interview with Arizona Sports Radio was especially explosive. In the interview, McCaskill attempted to defend his actions. “I never try to interfere,” McCaskill alleged. But then, McCaskill admitted that he’s been responsible not just for five, but NINE or TEN replay reviews due to his own actions. Thats nine or 10 times that McCaskill has affected the outcome of a baseball game. At some point, especially if McCaskill actually isn’t trying to interfere, you’d think he’d learn from his repeated big mistakes. But instead, McCaskill argued he is always under control. “I am aggressive, but I’m controlled aggressive,” McCaskill said. He also denied that he was close to falling over the outfield wall despite what the video may have shown. “I was under control the entire time,” McCaskill said.

McCaskill Is A Memorabilia Collector, Inspired By Zach Hample

According to McCaskill himself, he is a season ticket holder who has caught 24 home runs since he moved to Arizona 10 years ago. McCaskill was at least partially inspired by another more famous home-run chaser, YouTube personality Zach Hample. “I caught a foul ball my first year and a lightbulb went on, I was like I need to catch a home run,” McCaskill said. “I kind of follow Zach Hample a little bit.”Connecting himself to Hample might not be in McCaskill’s best interest, because Hample is a very controversial figure in the baseball community for his tactics. But McCaskill himself knows that and he made the connection anyway. “Zack Hample has kind of a bad rap for [knocking kids over], I don’t, I’m always careful,” McCaskill said. McCaskill is an autograph and memorabilia collector with over 1,200 autographs, per himself.

McCaskill Admits Koss’s Ball Would Have Been a Home Run If He Didn’t Interfere

To make matters even worse, McCaskill openly admitted in another interview that he thinks Koss’s hit would have bounced on top of, and over, the wall to tie the game 3-3.

Hear from the fan who has been banned from Diamondbacks games the remainder of 2025

“I’m a #Dbacks fan. I would never want to do anything to hurt the D-backs or have them lose the game.. I’ve only been ejected twice.”

“You see my glove hit the yellow, the top,” McCaskill said. “I think the ball would have bounced on top and gone over,” McCaskill said. He also said in the AZ Sports interview that he jumped in to snag the ball, leaning past other fans, because they weren’t reacting to try to catch it. The other fans’ reaction seems like the right one in a situation with a borderline home run. Ultimately, the ball was ruled a ground rule double. The Giants did not tie the game, going on to lose 4-2. Following the backlash, McCaskill has been banned from Chase Field for the remainder of the 2025 season. But they are open to bringing him back in 2026.

Here’s the full statement from the Diamondbacks regarding last night’s fan interference.

“This fan will have the opportunity to return to Chase Field in 2026 so long as he meets certain terms and abides by our fan code of conduct,” the Diamondbacks said in a statement.
