LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — A gorilla that’s been at the Louisville Zoo for over 21 years will be moving to the San Francisco Zoo.

Cecil, a 27-year-old western lowland gorilla, was identified as a candidate by the Gorilla Species Survival Plan for the eventual leadership of his own family group.

He arrived at the Louisville Zoo in January 2004, and his lineage is a strong match for the female gorillas at the San Francisco Zoo.

A special celebration will be held at the Louisville Zoo for Cecil in the Gorilla Forest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 12.

“Moving a gorilla isn’t just about logistics — it’s about heart, science and timing,” Louisville Zoo General Curator Ron Evans said in a written statement Thursday. “We’ve observed Cecil distancing from his bachelor companion, Kicho, which aligns perfectly with this next stage of his life.”

Cecil will live at the Jones Family Gorilla Preserve at the San Francisco Zoo.

Three female gorillas will be gradually introduced to Cecil over several months to create social bonds before breeding is considered.
